About Alaska Wildfire Season

Alaska's fire season runs from late May through late July, tracking the long daylight and frequent lightning of the summer solstice. Black spruce boreal forest and increasingly tundra sit atop a deep duff layer that can run a foot or more thick, and this is where Alaska's fire behavior departs from anywhere in the Lower 48. That duff layer can smolder underground for days or weeks, occasionally surviving through winter as a holdover fire that reignites the following spring. Nearly ninety percent of the state's burned area falls within the boreal interior between the Alaska and Brooks mountain ranges, and lightning, not people, drives the overwhelming majority of that activity.
