About Arizona Wildfire Season

Arizona's fire risk peaks in the weeks before the summer monsoon arrives, typically starting in April in the low desert and running into mid or late June in the higher country around the Mogollon Rim. The state splits cleanly between low desert fine fuels like grass and invasive buffelgrass and high country conifer forest. The monsoon itself is something of a double edged sword here. Heavier monsoon rains grow more grass and invasive species, setting up a larger fuel load for the following year, while the lightning that arrives with those same storms can spark new fires well before enough rain falls to keep them in check.
