About California Wildfire Season

California's fire season splits by geography. Northern California typically runs from late spring into early fall, peaking in the hot, dry summer months, while Southern California's season covers a similar span but stays sensitive to how much rain fell the previous winter and spring. Chaparral, dry grass, and timber cover steep slopes and canyons that can accelerate a fire's spread dramatically once it starts moving uphill. The most dangerous fires here often arrive outside that core summer window entirely, driven by offshore, downslope wind events, the Diablo winds in the north and the Santa Ana winds in the south, which have produced some of the fastest moving and most destructive fires in state history.
