About Florida Wildfire Season

Florida runs on the opposite calendar from most Western states, with its dry season stretching from October through May and its heaviest fire activity typically falling between April and June. Palmetto and gallberry understory, pine flatwoods, and dense vegetation across the central and southern parts of the state provide fuel that burns readily once conditions dry out. Hurricane season leaves its mark here too. Downed trees and limbs from storms become fuel load in the dry season that follows, and officials track a specific drought index built to measure how dry the soil and duff layer have become beneath the surface, since surface conditions alone can be misleading in a state this humid most of the year.
