Georgia's fire season runs opposite the Western pattern, with activity concentrated from January through April rather than summer. Pine covers a large share of the state's forest land, including fire adapted longleaf stands, and in late winter the bare hardwood canopy lets direct sunlight reach and dry the forest floor before new growth returns in spring. Debris burning is by far the leading cause of wildfires here, responsible for more than half of the state's total, which makes Georgia's fire risk as much a story about routine yard cleanup gone wrong as it is about weather or drought. That combination of leaf off sunlight and widespread debris burning defines the season more than any single climate factor.Georgia Fire Map Today
