About Idaho Wildfire Season

Idaho's fire season runs from July through August, with some years extending into September. The state splits clearly by region. Southern Idaho's sagebrush and cheatgrass rangeland cures earliest and burns fastest, central mountain conifer forests burn longest and hottest once ignited, and the panhandle's higher elevations hold snow later into the year, which delays but does not reduce the eventual risk once that terrain dries out. Invasive cheatgrass has reshaped fire behavior across the southern part of the state in particular, curing earlier than the native bunchgrass it has displaced and carrying flame faster across the landscape, a documented shift in how fire moves through Idaho's rangeland compared to its forested regions further north.
