Indiana's primary fire window runs from mid February through May, roughly fourteen weeks, with smaller rises in late summer during drought and again in fall as crop residue and leaf litter build up. The state splits north to south. The flat, wind swept agricultural north sees fast moving grass and crop residue fires, while the hilly, heavily forested south, anchored by the Hoosier National Forest, burns oak hickory leaf litter in terrain that is harder to access. Indiana and Ohio share an unusually strict humidity threshold for issuing red flag warnings, and much of Indiana's oak woodland is now actively managed with prescribed fire specifically to help oak trees compete against shade tolerant species that moved in during decades of suppression.Indiana Fire Map Today
