About Maryland Wildfire Season
Maryland's fire season runs in two windows, a primary one from mid February through early May and a secondary one from October through mid December, the standard leaf off pattern found across the Mid Atlantic. The state splits into suburban, fragmented Piedmont forest, harder to access western Appalachian terrain with deeper duff, and pine stands that carry fire especially fast when spring winds pick up. Most Maryland fires stay small, typically under ten acres, but total acreage burned nearly doubled in a recent season, driven largely by arson rather than weather. Maryland also runs a mandatory statewide burning ban every summer, a regulatory response to its quieter off peak months rather than to the season when fire risk actually runs highest.Maryland Fire Map Today
