About Massachusetts Wildfire Season

Massachusetts sees its primary fire activity in spring, from March through May, with a fall window in October and November that has recently become severe in its own right. The state's risk varies sharply by region. Cape Cod and the Plymouth area hold sandy soil pine barrens that burn fast and unpredictably, central Massachusetts is largely hardwood forest pressed against suburban development, and the Berkshires in the west carry heavier fuel loads but see fewer ignitions overall. A recent fall saw wildfire activity jump roughly twelvefold over a normal October and November, driven by drought that left typically fire resistant New England fuels critically dry, a striking departure from the moist reputation the region usually carries.
