ACTIVEAbout Montana Wildfire Season
Montana's fire season peaks around mid July and typically runs about twelve weeks, spanning May through October in a normal year. The Continental Divide splits the state cleanly into two different fire regimes. Western mountain timber, much of it standing dead from beetle kill, burns differently than the central and eastern prairie grass on the other side, and each presents its own access and suppression challenges. Lightning drives many of Montana's largest and most remote fires, striking terrain that can be difficult to reach quickly, which is part of why some of the state's biggest incidents have grown so large before crews could respond. That mountains versus plains divide is really the defining fact of how fire behaves across Montana.Montana Fire Map Today
