About Nevada Wildfire Season
Nevada's fire season runs from May through October, with the southern part of the state typically starting earlier than the north. Sagebrush rangeland increasingly gives way to cheatgrass monoculture, and across the broader West, rangeland like this has accounted for nearly three quarters of all acres burned over the past two decades, more than forest fires. Cheatgrass is a winter annual, meaning it germinates in fall or early winter, gets a head start on native bunchgrass, and is fully cured and ready to burn by June. That timing creates a counterintuitive effect where a wetter winter can actually raise fire risk months later by growing a larger crop of this same fast drying invasive grass, a pattern documented in the state's largest fire on record.Nevada Fire Map Today
