About New Jersey Wildfire Season
New Jersey's fire risk peaks in spring, from March through May, the state's single busiest stretch. The Pine Barrens of South Jersey hold pitch pine and sandy soil that dry out with remarkable speed. Pine trees cast little shade and the oaks nearby do not leaf out until mid May, so the porous, sandy soil beneath them can be primed to burn just hours after rain falls. That combination makes the Pinelands one of the most fire prone ecosystems anywhere in the eastern United States, a striking fact given how small and densely populated New Jersey is compared to the Western states usually associated with wildfire risk.New Jersey Fire Map Today
