ACTIVEAbout New Mexico Wildfire Season
New Mexico's fire season runs from early May through June, ahead of the summer monsoon. Mid elevation ponderosa and mixed conifer forest carries a heavy fuel load built up over a century of fire suppression, while grassland dominates the state's eastern reaches. Strong, nearly constant wind is a defining feature here, not just a seasonal factor, and it shapes fire behavior throughout the year. The state's largest fire on record, the Calf Canyon and Hermits Peak fire in 2022, did not start naturally at all. It began as an escaped prescribed burn, a reminder that intentional, agency set fire carries its own real risk in a landscape this dry and this heavily loaded with fuel.New Mexico Fire Map Today
