About Oklahoma Wildfire Season

Oklahoma's fire risk peaks in March, historically its most active month, followed closely by April, with a secondary rise in July and August. Cured dead grass covers the state and provides ready fuel once conditions turn dry. March is also one of Oklahoma's windiest months, and wind speed, more than total rainfall, is the variable that actually determines how dangerous a given day becomes, since the thin, quick drying fuels that dominate the landscape respond to hour to hour humidity swings rather than longer term drought totals. That sensitivity to short term wind, layered on top of grassland that cures fast every year regardless of the broader climate picture, is what gives Oklahoma's fire season its particular character.
