About Pennsylvania Wildfire Season

Pennsylvania's fire season follows the standard bimodal Appalachian pattern, spring from March through May when a bare canopy lets sunlight dry out leaf litter, and fall from October through November when deep, fluffy leaves accumulate on the forest floor. Seventeen million acres of mixed hardwood forest cover the state, including the roughly half million acre Allegheny National Forest in the northwest. Ninety nine percent of Pennsylvania's wildfires are human caused, mostly from debris burning, among the highest shares of any state. A recent season marked the fifth consecutive year with over a thousand wildfires, and officials note that drought is beginning to blur the once reliable spring and fall pattern into something wider and less predictable, driven by wide swings between wet and dry stretches.
