ACTIVEAbout South Carolina Wildfire Season
South Carolina's fire season runs from January through mid April, with March typically the most active month. Coastal plain sandy soil, loblolly pine, and dense underbrush burn quickly, while piedmont fires can burrow underground and persist in stump holes or duff layers long after the visible flame is gone. Unlike Florida, South Carolina has no clear wet or dry season, its driest months actually fall in autumn, and the winter and spring peak that follows comes from cured, dormant fuel rather than drought. Nearly all of the state's largest fires share a common trigger, cold front wind events combined with human ignition, and debris burning specifically accounts for the vast majority of South Carolina's wildfires overall.South Carolina Fire Map Today
