About South Dakota Wildfire Season
South Dakota's fire risk runs on two tracks, a grassland season from February through April and a forest season in the Black Hills from June through August, with an official grassland fire danger index published daily from April through October. Prairie grassland covers most of the state, while the forested Black Hills in the west hold heavier fuel and have been the site of the state's largest and deadliest fires historically. South Dakota is one of the few states with a formal, published index combining temperature, humidity, wind, and how cured the grass has become, and it explicitly emphasizes that wind speed matters more than heat or dryness alone, since even fully cured grass will not carry fire quickly without strong wind behind it.South Dakota Fire Map Today
