About Texas Wildfire Season

Texas runs on two separate fire seasons. The first stretches from mid February to early April, driven by dormant season grass and cold fronts sweeping across the state, concentrated along and west of Interstate 35. The second runs from August through October during summer drought. Panhandle grasslands paired with cold front wind events produced the largest wildfire in Texas history in February 2024, and the state's core fuel type across much of its risk area is semi arid grassland rather than forest. That grassland character, combined with wind driven cold fronts rather than a single summer dry spell, is what actually defines when and where Texas sees its worst fire activity each year.
