About Utah Wildfire Season

Utah's fire season generally runs from July through October, though it is closely tied to how the summer monsoon behaves, with southern Utah typically starting earlier and running longer than the rest of the state. Pinyon juniper woodland and sagebrush dominate the desert south, while heavier snowpack protects higher elevation forests in the central and northern parts of the state until later in summer. Utah's fire behavior is unusually sensitive to the monsoon's timing. A late or dry monsoon, meaning thunderstorms that bring lightning without much rain, is treated as its own distinct risk category here, since it adds new ignition sources without the moisture that would otherwise help keep fire spread in check.
