About Vermont Wildfire Season

Vermont's fire season typically runs from the end of March through early June, with an occasional secondary window in dry years from mid to late August into September. Dead grass, leaves, and twigs left over after snowmelt make up most of the state's fuel, and spring fires here rarely burn deep enough into the ground litter to complicate cleanup afterward. Vermont's own geography creates a real lag within its spring season. Southern counties, lower elevations, and south facing slopes dry out well before northern counties and higher terrain do, so spring fire season is less a single statewide window and more a slow wave that moves across the state over several weeks.
