About Washington Wildfire Season

Washington's fire season runs primarily from July through October. The Cascades split the state sharply, with roughly seventy percent of the fires the Department of Natural Resources fights occurring in eastern Washington's grass, shrub steppe, and dry pine, while fires west of the crest remain genuinely rare. Western Washington's rainforest reputation can be misleading here. Events like the 2015 Carlton Complex show that the state's real worst case fires happen in the dry, wind exposed eastern basin, not in the wetter forests most people associate with the state. That east west divide is really the single most important fact for understanding where and when Washington's fire risk actually concentrates.
