About West Virginia Wildfire Season

West Virginia's fire season is legally defined with broader windows than its neighbor Virginia, spring from March 1 to May 31 and fall from October 1 to December 31. Appalachian hardwood forest covers the state more heavily than almost anywhere else in the country, and most fires here burn along the surface through litter and small brush rather than crowning through the canopy except in extreme conditions. Fires cluster disproportionately in the southern coalfield counties, where a pattern of absentee land ownership correlates with a higher arson rate than the rest of the state, a distinctly regional and ownership driven pattern rather than a purely climate driven one. A historic 1950 event, with 65 mile per hour winds producing nearly two hundred fires in a single county in eight hours, still anchors how the state thinks about its worst case scenario.
