About Wyoming Wildfire Season

Wyoming's fire season peaks around July and August, generally running from June through September but capable of extending from April into December in a particularly dry year. Sagebrush steppe covers the state's basins while mountain pine and spruce timber, much of it standing dead from beetle kill, dominates the high country. Invasive cheatgrass has been directly tied to specific recent fires here, and the state's worst fire on record, the 2020 Mullen Fire, was driven by winds over seventy miles per hour tearing through beetle killed deadfall. That combination, dry lightning striking a landscape with almost no natural moderation left in it, is the core pattern behind Wyoming's most dangerous fires.
